The Arado Ar.196 was the best known German seaplane of the Second World War. It was mainly employed by the Coastal Air Wings and Marine Reconnaissance units, but a number also found their way onto German capital ships. One of the few seaplanes to see service in the Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea, the Ar.196's primary duties consisted of reconnaissance and shadowing of service vessels. After Germany's capital ships ceased active participation in the war, most Ar.196 were relegated to sea patrols from shore bases.

L'Arado Ar.196 è stato uno dei più noti idrovolanti tedeschi della Seconda guerra mondiale e uno dei pochi attivi sia nell’Atlantico sia nel Mediterraneo. Fu impiegato soprattutto per la ricognizione e un certo numero venne imbarcato sulle unità maggiori della Marina. Successivamente fu relegato al pattugliamento marittimo da basi costiere.
